CSL has become the first mobile operator in Hong Kong to offer commercial services running on an LTE-Advanced carrier aggregation network.

The telco has aggregated 20 MHz of 1800-MHz spectrum and 20 MHz of 2.6-GHz spectrum to offer a service capable of delivering a theoretical peak connection speed of 300 Mbps.

The service went live on Monday in a number of New Territories districts including Sha Tin, Sheung Shui, Tai Po, Fanling, Lok Ma Chau, Kam Tin, and Shek Kong. It is also available in the Kowloon West areas of Lai Chi Kok and Mei Foo, as well as the iSquare shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui. From 28 December, CSL's LTE-A network will also be live for customers travelling on the MTR's West Island light railway line.

In early 2015, CSL plans to extend coverage to the new town of Ma On Shan on the New Territories' east coast, and Sai Kung – Hong Kong's second-largest district.

"We will continue to upgrade our 4G LTE network and increase the maximum speed of [our] mobile broadband network from 150 Mbps to 300 Mbps throughout the territory," said Alex Arena, managing director of CSL's parent company HKT, in a statement late last week.

According to a slide presentation on the company's Website, new and existing 4G customers can take advantage of the higher speeds at no extra cost. They will require a Cat 6 device to access the network; CSL appears to have lined up the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
